Activity Details
We'll meet just outside the main entrance to Piramide Metro Station at the indicated time to set off on an exciting half-day tour of Ostia Antica. From here, we'll take a brief 30-minute train ride to arrive in Ostia Antica.
Our tour through the archeological site of Ostia Antica will begin with a brief introduction to the history of the Roman Empire's most important seaport. As we walk through the ancient streets, we'll learn about the grain trade that led to the city's wealth over the years. Did you know the city once had 50,000 inhabitants?
As we continue our route, we'll visit the Baths of Neptune to admire the incredibly preserved Neptune's Chariot mosaic. These baths once had numerous pools, saunas, and gymnasiums. In total, 26 different bath complexes have been uncovered in Ostia, with some still claiming an intact thermodynamic system 2,000 years later.
Next up, we'll visit the amphitheater, one of the most iconic sites in Ostia Antica. This impressive space, once used by the Romans for gladiator battles and theater performances, has been impeccably preserved over time. In fact, you can still catch a show or concert here!
Then, we'll walk over to the Forum of Corporations, an open-air market where people met to discuss and exchange ideas. In Roman times, this is where people came to sell everything from international goods to everyday essentials.
Finally, after 4 hours of sightseeing, we'll bring the guided tour to an end. You’ll have the flexibility to return to Rome at your leisure with your open-return train ticket.
